That is the historic Crystal Beach Community Church you see on your left. The street turns right and your expanding view of the Gulf begins.
You are actually between two parks separated by North Gulf Drive. On your left Gulf Shore Park offers a wide grassy expanse between the street and the beach with benches for sitting and taking in the magnificent view of the Gulf. It is an excellent place to catch a sunset.
The block-long sandy beach area is a most inviting place for your own beach chair or perhaps a towel to stretch out and work on that tan. Just relax, wet your toes and let your imagination take you out to the two islands you see in the distance. Could they have played any part in the area's history? Farther along the beach you'll find the red wooden pier that extends quite a ways out. It's currently closed for repairs from storm damage yet it still adds much to the scene (and your sunset photos).
Across the street and parallel to the beach is Live Oak Park. You quickly see whence its name comes. It's a welcoming place with paved sidewalks for walking, benches and picnic tables for resting and again plenty of grass areas and the many shapes of the shady oak trees. Note the stone fountain from another time, dedication plaques, a gazebo and yes, even a fountain for you and your favorite four footed sidekick.
If you are looking for a quiet space for contemplation or a beach that isn't so terribly crowded, the kind of place you'll see working people stop by at lunchtime for a calming and amazing Gulf view - then this is your kind of place. We really enjoyed our visit and think it may end up on our favorite “Top Ten Parks of 100” at this project's end.
See what you think and after your visit we'd love to have you post your own comments and photos here for others to see. It is a neighborhood park so enjoy it but also we need to always be respectful of our neighbors for sharing.
